Apple begins construction on Prineville data center

Apple has started the first phase of construction of its new data center in Prineville, Oregon. The construction of the first of two buildings will cost Apple $68 million, and the building will be 338,000 square feet and contain two “data halls”. Future plans include a second building identical to the first, along with fourteen more data halls. Apple originally purchased the 160-acre plot of land in February, as OregonLive reports:

Apple paid $5.6 million in February to buy 160 acres from Crook County, and promptly set up a small, 10,000 square foot modular data center on the site.

Only the modular facility is visible from the street. Apple, always secretive, restricts access to its main construction site.

In addition to the two massive buildings already planned, there is enough land for additional development, should Apple decide to expand the facility. Apple has committed to power the data center using only renewable energy sources, including hydroelectric, geothermal, and wind power. While they haven’t announced when it will open, Apple has said that the facility will employ “dozens” of people when it is finally constructed.

When complete, the Prineville complex will be the second massive data center that Apple has built for iCloud in the United States, after opening their North Carolina facility in late 2010. With iCloud playing a central role in both iOS and OS X, investments like these are important for Apple to make in order to build a robust and stable infrastructure for their services, and the North Carolina and Prineville facilities are surely the first of many such facilities to come.

Scarlett Johansson, Nate Naylor Break-Up

‘The Avengers’ starlet Scarlett Johansson has broken up with boyfriend Nate Naylor after going public with her former beau at the beginning of this year.                               It looks like actress Scarlett Johansson just can’t seem to get it right in the love department.  The former wife of actor Ryan Reynolds, who has since moved on, marrying Gossip Girl Blake Lively, has split up with her boyfriend Nate Naylor. According to a source who spoke with People Magazine, Johansson was the one to call it quits, ending the reported 10-month romance with the creative advertising director.  “She broke up with him last week,” Adding, “He’s pretty upset but the writing was on the wall. A lot of people were surprised it lasted this long.” Things appeared to be going well for the couple until just recently.  Back in April while talking to Vogue Magazine, the 27-year old Johansson commented on how terrific Naylor was for dating a celebrity in the public eye.  “It must be very strange for him,” she said of their relationship that began in January. “It’s totally bizarre. It’s an adjustment – I mean, [...]

Fake Sony Nexus was fake

Android Central Android Central

That 'Sony Nexus X' was an elaborate hoax, but not of the kind we expected

Remember those Sony Nexus X images doing the rounds a few days back? Remember how we pointed how that things looked a bit fishy? Well, the person who created the photos has come forward today, and it turns out they were indeed fake, as we reported at the time.

But that's not the interesting part. What's astonishing is the amount of effort that went into creating a couple of low-quality images. Turns out the images weren't the result of Photoshop trickery alone, but hours of painstaking 3D model work based on earlier Sony and Nexus designs. It was fake, all right, but not in the way we thought.

The entire process of creating the Nexus X images was laid out for all to see in an infographic entitled "The Anatomy of a Hoax." Using phones like the Galaxy Nexus and Xperia T as a starting point, the creator first fashioned a 3D model, then placed it in a virtual background, and added a reflection from the back of a Galaxy Nexus for good measure. After that, it was put through Photoshop to, well, make it look crappy enough to have come from a Galaxy Nexus camera. In total, he estimates it took a total of over seven hours work to create the images.

The reason for the hoax, apparently, was to demonstrate consumer interest in a Sony Nexus to Google, and show how the tech news echo chamber can throw basic caution and fact-checking to the wind.

This is something we're all too familiar with -- we deal with shit like this on a daily basis, especially in the pre-Nexus silly season. We weren't caught out this time, though like everyone else, we have been in the past.

In any case, we encourage you to go take a look at the full infographic, if only to appreciate the effort that went into producing those tiny, blurred (and yes, fully faked) JPEGs.

NEC LaVie Y brings Lenovo's 360-degree IdeaPad Yoga hybrid tablet to Japan

NEC LaVie Y mates Windows RT, 360degree hybrid tablet for the Japanese crowd

Don't think that Lenovo is keeping the IdeaPad Yoga's bendy secrets all to itself: its Japanese partner NEC is bringing a variant of the ARM-based Yoga 11 to the land of the rising sun as the LaVie Y. The 11.6-inch blend of laptop and tablet keeps the signature 360-degree display, 2GB of RAM and 64GB of storage as its more internationally-minded counterpart, and confirms that there's a quad-core Tegra 3 powering either of the Windows RT systems. What differences exist will stem from the software: there's hints of a custom NEC app on an otherwise vanilla interpretation of Microsoft's platform. The LaVie Y should precede its IdeaPad sibling by days, arriving in stores around November 22nd, although any local buyers will pay dearly for the privilege with an estimated $1,136 price. We'd suggest that patience ought to be a virtue for everyone else.

[Thanks, Gerald]

Best Buy Lists the Lumia 920 at $150 and the HTC 8X at $100 As AT&T Starts Taking Pre-Orders

Roughly a week ahead of the Windows Phone 8 launch on October 29th, AT&T and Best Buy have put out some pricing details on the new Lumia 920 and the HTC 8X via the Best Buy website: $149 for the Lumia and $99 for the 8X. And pre-orders are open now. More »

Best Buy offering preorders for Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X for $14999 and $9999 under contract

Nokia and HTC's upcoming Windows Phone 8 flagships are still on the standard release path: announcement, federal approval and now, pre-order. Keeping device availability tucked firmly under its hat, Best Buy is now offering Nokia's Lumia 920 and the HTC 8X for pre-sale, priced at $149.99 and $99.99, respectively. Early buyers have options, too: the Lumia 920 is kitted out in red, blue, yellow, black and white shells. Fashionistas with a flair for purple, however, will need to stick to HTC's hardware. Unfortunately, you don't get that much choice -- Bust Buy's pre-orders don't balk at the devices' AT&T exclusivity. The retailer doesn't say when devices are going to ship, but we imagine early adopters won't have to wait too long.

VooMote Zapper Universal Remote Control for iPad review

Tired of having to search for all of your remote controls and don’t want to pay the high prices for a dedicated universal remote like the Harmony series from Logitech? Well VooMote offers a solution that might be of particular interest to iOS users.

Once you attach the VooMote to your iPad or older generation iPhone or iPod touch (the kind with a traditional 30-pin Dock connector),and run VooMote's proprietary app from the App Store, the combo allows you to gain control of infrared controlled devices such as TV’s, DVD players, DTV receivers and Stereos.

VooMote Zapper Universal Remote Control for iPad review

Setup is straight forward. You’re able to either download pre-configured name-brand signals, or you can teach the Voomote any number of controllers using the original remotes. The VooMote also has the ability to create custom controls, using multiple virtual remotes, in one view. There's even a one-touch option that will turn on or off multiple devices at once, and an option for gesture controls.

Although they advertise a 30 second setup, any unknown devices can be a chore to setup. Once saved, however iCloud can sync those settings to all your iOS devices. Another seemingly neat feature is the interactive TV guide. However, even though my postal code was found, I could never save my settings to the app to get this feature working.

Overall, I can’t say I recommend the VooMote as a replacement to your regular remotes. I found it more tedious to swipe through the different virtual remotes than to simply just use my real remote. I also don’t think that many people would want to devote a dedicated iPod touch or iPad to Voomote, and it's annoying to keep having to stop what you're doing and switch back to the Voomote app on your iPhone when you're trying to do other things.

iOS as a remote control is a great idea. The VooMote just isn't a great implementation yet.
